LinkedIn Premium vs. your own data export

Premium shows you who clicked. Your data export shows you what they saw. One is a subscription; the other you already own. Here is which actually helps you get hired.

LinkedIn Premium is a good business. It is a less obviously good purchase. The pitch is visibility — who viewed you, how you compare, InMail to strangers. The bill arrives every month whether or not any of it moved you closer to an offer.

There is a quieter alternative you already own: your data export. It does not tell you who clicked. It tells you something more useful — what they saw when they did.

What each one actually gives you

  • Premium: who viewed your profile, applicant rankings, salary ranges, InMail credits, courses. A monthly subscription.
  • Your export: the inferred categories the algorithm files you under, your full message history, your network and its decay, your activity record. A free download you can take any time.
Premium shows you the audience. Your export shows you the performance. You can only fix the one you can see.

The case against a subscription you forget

Most career help is sold as a recurring relationship: a monthly seat, a coach on retainer, a tool you stop opening by week three. The market is already a treadmill. The last thing it needs is another subscription quietly debiting you while you are not looking.

That is why a read of your own export is a one-time thing. You pull the file, you get the diagnosis, you act on it. No standing charge for the privilege of seeing yourself clearly. When you want the cure — a resume tailored to the role you are actually chasing — that is where the work begins.

Premium is not a scam. It is just answering a different question than the one that gets you hired. If you are paying monthly to see who looked, and never reading what they looked at, you have the subscription backwards.
