Are your LinkedIn skills burying you? A recruiter-Boolean audit

Recruiters search for candidates with Boolean strings against your listed skills. The wrong skills — or stale ones — quietly file you under jobs you do not want. Here is how to audit them.

Your skills list feels like a formality — a wall of tags you stopped curating years ago. To a recruiter, it is a search index. They do not read your profile top to bottom; they run Boolean strings against your structured data and your skills are a large part of what decides whether you surface at all.

Which means a stale or scattered skills list does not just sit there harmlessly. It actively files you under the wrong searches — and under the wrong jobs.

How recruiters actually search

A recruiter for a senior brand role is not typing "good at marketing." They are running something closer to ("brand strategy" OR "brand marketing") AND ("go-to-market" OR GTM) AND "demand generation". If those exact tokens are not on you, you are not in the result set — no matter how strong the rest of your profile is.

The three ways skills bury you

  • Drift: skills from a career you have left (and are trying to leave behind) still anchor you to it.
  • Dilution: forty endorsed skills with no priority read as "generalist" to a search built for specialists.
  • Gaps: the exact tokens for the role you want are simply missing, so you never appear.
A skill you no longer want to be hired for is not neutral. It is a vote, cast on your behalf, for the past.

Run the audit

Take the three or four roles you are genuinely chasing. Write the Boolean string a recruiter would plausibly use for each. Now hold it against your listed skills and mark every token that is present, missing, or actively pulling you toward work you are done with. The pattern is usually obvious within minutes — and uncomfortable.

Then prune and sharpen: cut the drift, surface the tokens that match where you are going, and let the list argue for the next job instead of the last one. The export makes this concrete — it shows you the skills exactly as the machine has them, which is the only version that counts.

The read is the diagnosis
